Step-by-Step: Trip Rod Installation (Models 28, 302 & 50)
Remove Nylon Zip Ties from the Door Lock, Pan, Trip Rod & Stake.
Place the trap in front of you, turned so that the door is to your right. Start the 90 degree bend of the Trip Rod through the Nut on the side of the door as shown.
Drop the end of the Trip Rod down through the heavy Triangle Ring as shown.
Insert end of the Trip Rod through wire just in front of the Pan frame, 2nd wire space from the bottom (this step is made easier by pulling down on the center of the Trip Rod with the right hand while simultaneously pushing up on the 90 degree end with the left thumb).
Step-by-Step: Setting the Trap
Lift the Lock Bar.
Lift the Door.
While holding door open with left hand, turn trip rod under door with right hand.
Lift pan with left hand and twist trip rod with right hand so 90 degree end of trip rod will set on top of pan notch.
When trap is set properly, it can be bumped or the door lifted without tripping the trap. This allows trap to stay set until the animal steps on the pan resulting in higher percentage of catches and less empty traps!

Adjustment for door tension; traps are pre-adjusted at the factory for most situations; however tension my be adjusted if needed.
Filing the Pan Notch
The Pan Notch may need filing after many years of use. A 7/32" Round "Chainsaw" file will accomplish the task.
Staking a trap keeps animals from moving it. Staking also keeps them from tipping the trap over and escaping after they have been caught.
Secure the trap by placing stake through the trap cage wire and into the dirt as far as possible. Position stake as close to back or side of cage as possible to reduce animals ability of getting behind stake and bending it. If trap stake can't be pushed into the soil, it can be ran through the bottom front of trap horizontally and wired into place.
Other methods to secure the trap include leaning a tree limb, fence post, large rocks or concrete block against the trap or wiring trap to a solid object.
